Baptism

October 2, 1983 I was baptized into Christ. It was a day I'll never forget because it was so meaningful to me. Not being raised in a religious or Christian home, coming to faith in Christ was the greatest thing that every happened to me.

I came to understand the message of salvation when I was a freshman in high school, in 1982. However, because of my mothers hostility towards God, and the belief she had that I was in a cult, she refused to let me get baptized for a whole year. Finally the day came for me to be baptized and my mother decided to run off to Vegas an get married instead of attending my baptism.

You might find that amazing, but it's the story of how walking out my faith began.

I remember my friend Carolyn taking me aside and sharing with me the seriousness of this commitment. She told me that once I did this, that the enemy of my soul would be after me because he knew I was commited to follow Christ. There has never been a truer statement, and I've never forgotten it.

So why do I bring this up today - well, I saw two precious ones baptized this morning into Christ. One was a little 11 year old boy and the other was his mother. It was a wonderful event to watch, as these two were immersed completely under water, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Being buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life.

Baptism is a life changing event. It is a step of obedience. It is a step of faith, and even to people like my mother, sometimes it's a step of defiance.

I remember the water I was dunked in was ice cold! But when I went down, I remember it getting very warm and when I came up I knew I was forgiven, clean and released from hell.

God is good indeed! And the great news is that He saves anyone who desires that salvation.

Incidently, my mother did receive Christ as Lord and Savior 20 years after my conversion. She was baptized in her tub at home, Easter Sunday 2 years ago and only 7 months before she entered her eternal home.

Miracles do happen.
