Religious Patriots Choose God

Patriotism, the love of and devotion to one's country, has much in common with religious faith, particularly monotheistic faith. Trust and loyalty are invoked in both our religious and our national existence, by our love of both God and country. Both our faith and national communities, moreover, represent themselves as communities with a mission. Because the language and dynamics of religion and patriotism are much the same, it is understandable that they often become entangled. That is perhaps why we have so much evangelical patriotism and patriotic evangelicalism in the air. We need to do some sorting.
